UM Models : BT5 and converted Milicast figures

This is simply a fantastic kit from start to finish and I really enjoyed putting it together. If this is what all UM Models kits are like I'll be adding the lot to my collection. I built this vehicle to be from the short war between Finland and the Soviet Union before WWII.

PARTS AND CONSTRUCTION
The parts are well cast, well detailed and although a good bit of patience is needed getting the hull plates together fit well (very similar build to the Zvezda1/35 scale kit). There are nice etched brass included with the kit and the link length track is superb although putting them together is a bit tricky (would be better to finish on the rear lower section)

PAINTING
I mixed various shades green enamels for this one progressively lightening untill getting the desired effect. I then gave the lower hull and other areas various shades of earth to light buff. Once dry I gave the kit a wash with dilute oils of various shades (greens, dark browns). I then picked out detail areas (exhaust, track and wheels). I also added gem stones for light. As I have problems with decals so I first penciled then handpainted the markings on the turret. To finish off the kit I used pastels to weather and blend the kit to the base.

BASEWORK
The base was quite straight forward. I used polyfila mixed with white glue and some model railway long grass. It was then sprayed and dry brushed.
Pastels were used to blend the vehicle in to the base.

FIGURES
The figures are small conversions of the excellent Milicast Soviet AFV Crew scupted by Tony Bousted and the only thing I really did was alter arms, heads and hands and for my first conversions i'm pretty happy how they turned out.

CONCLUSION
This is a fantastic kit and I am seriously considering buying and building another one very soon but I think I'll settle for another one of UM Models offering. I definately recommend this kit to fellow modellers. it may be a little tricky for the younger modeller though. i was concerned about the price before buying this on but I am now sold on it. UM Models kits are in my opinion definately a welcome addition to the smallscale market

I picked this kit up at Jamiesons Model Shop Glasgow

Thank to Tom from Milicast for taking the photo's!
